Operation Omega
Operation Omega was the task force dedicated to finding the serial killer, David Berkowitz. After the forth attack, Joe Borrelli and Joe Coffee were put on the case to track down the infamous "Son of Sam". They had little evidence to work with and only connection between the murders were the similar situations and victims. The victims had no relations with one another, which led the homicide team to believe that the murders were done at random by someone on a killing spree. This relaxation was frightening because the detectives had no idea who could be next and the panic continued throughout the city. Soon, Timothy Dowd put together Operation Omega, which was a team devoted to tracking down the "Son of Sam". After Berkowitz's fifth attack, he left a letter at the crime scene, which allowed the detectives to get a glimpse of the killer that they were chasing. Addressed to detective Borrelli, Berkowitz referred to himself as "Son of Sam" and claimed to be possessed by demons. The officers were now in a race against time and against the media to find the killer before the next attack. Around this time, Jack Cassara and the Carr family had been receiving strange letters and eventually found a connection between the letters and the Carr's old neighbor, Berkowitz. The Carr's german Shepard had been shot and it was remembered that Berkowitz had complained numerous times about the dog. WIth this little information, they informed the police but there seemed to be no connection at the time between Berkowitz and the killings. In July, 1977, Berkowitz struck again but this time a witness was there and was able to sketch the suspect. The sketch was extremely similar to the families' description of Berkowitz, but still there wasn't enough evidence. Soon it was discovered that traffic tickets had been given out around the area of the shooting to Berkowitz and that was enough for the police to take him seriously as a suspect. Eventually the police tracked Berkowitz down and approached him, when asked who he was, Berkowitz replied that he was "Sam"; admitting to the murders immediately. Berkowitz was arrested and cooperated fully, telling the police every detail about the shootings and making a full confession.
